BSSH Masters: Director of Education
Purpose of the Role
To provide educational leadership and continuity for the BSSH Masters programme and ensuring consistent delivery. You will liaise most frequently, and are heavily supported by, the Diploma and Masters Co-ordinator who is part of the BSSH secretariat.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary educational contact for prospective and enrolled Masters candidates. This is usually via the BSSH Diploma and Masters Co-ordinator.
- Provide advice and support regarding programme structure, regulations and progression.
- Resolve candidate queries by reference to the BSSH Masters Course Manual and, where appropriate, liaise with the University of Manchester or previous programme leads.
- Escalate complex academic or administrative issues when required.
- Deliver the introductory Masters presentation during the annual Research & Design course (normally held in June).
- Provide advice and support to the Diploma/Masters Coordinator regarding organisation and delivery of the Research & Design course.
- Maintain familiarity with current Masters regulations and programme documentation.
- Other projects may occur, such as revision of the handbook every 3 years or addressing issues raised by the 5-yearly University of Manchester periodic review.
Time requirements per year:
- Initial reading of the course manual 2-4hrs.
- Exam board meeting 1hr + 1-2hrs prep (Jan)
- R&D course 1 hr lecture (already prepared).
- R&D course organisational queries/set up 2-4hrs of emails (most of the burden of the course is handled by Co-ordinator).
- Prepare yearly reports for the Exam board and update (via the Diploma Director) BSSH council of any changes to the course or requirements (approx. 1hr work).
- June: Diploma and Masters committee meeting x1 f2f committee 8hrs (+1hr reading prep papers)
- September: Diploma and Masters committee meeting x1 online 2hrs (+30min reading prep)
- Other projects TBC such as modernising the course

- Full GMC registration
- Consultant level or equivalent in Orthopaedic / Plastic surgery
- Fellow (full member) of the BSSH
- Higher degree - Masters/PHD (may be in any discipline)

- Masters in Hand Surgery

| EXPERIENCE |
- Experience of writing a dissertation.
- Published in Hand surgery journals.
- AES or CS experience
|
- Publication of systematic review/meta-analysis in Hand surgery
|
| KNOWLEDGE |
- Understanding of research processes
- Up to date with current evidence in Hand Surgery
|
- Have a detailed knowledge of the BSSH Masters programme
