Diploma Tutors
Who are approved diploma tutors?
- There is a large network of diploma tutors that are involved in helping candidates complete their diploma.
- All diploma tutors are approved by the Diploma Director and the University of Manchester
- All our diploma tutors are committed to teaching for the diploma, many have completed the diploma themselves.
- As a tutors you may be contacted by candidates ahead of them starting a placement/fellowship
- If you need help to contact other tutors or supervisors you can find a link to the full list below or contact diploma@bssh.ac.uk who will be able to put you in touch.
Why are approved diploma tutors needed?
- Modules 1-8 of the course include a series of tutorials and work-place based assessments (WBAs) that are conducted by the local diploma supervisor and diploma tutors.
- In order to satisfy quality assurance procedures within Higher Education, the University require all tutors to be approved.
- This is achieved by the tutors completing a proforma CV and signing an agreement form.
NB: Any tutorials or WBAs for the modules undertaken must be completed with an approved tutor. Make sure you are approved prior to undertaking tutorials.
It is expected that a Diploma tutor:
- Has read the tutors guide. See Section 8.3 in the Course Manual see below
- Will be available, constructive and supportive
- Has appropriate expertise and experience in the practice of hand surgery and be widely read with current knowledge of relevant research and clinical trends
- Will try to identify what the candidate has done well and where improvements can be made
- Will advise the participating surgeon of their leave periods so that tutorials can be planned appropriately
- Will clearly document a record of each tutorial in the appropriate module section of the Record of Coursework and Assessments book. This will contain a brief description of the topic covered in that tutorial and should be signed and dated by the tutor
- Where relevant, will support marking of ‘Rehabilitation lecture’, ‘Meeting Critique coursework’ and pre-submission review of the ‘Algorithm’ coursework.
It is recommended that any surgeon thinking of taking on such a role should have this formally incorporated into and recognised on their job plan. There needs to be a period of time devoted to the tutorials and internal assessments. Tutorial time needs to be protected and free of competing duties.
