Patient Self Registration
- for the UK Hand Registry

WELCOME TO BSSH PATIENT SELF REGISTRATION!
What is the UK Hand Registry?
The BSSH UK Hand Registry is a database for the clinical outcomes of all hand procedures and joint preservation treatments conducted in the United Kingdom. The BSSH funded and created a database for the collection of hand procedures back in 2011 with the aim to improve patient safety and monitor the results of Hand Surgery . In September 2018, this database was updated and expanded to the version that is currently being utilised. The UK Hand Registry is overseen by a Steering Committee comprised of orthopaedic surgeons, hand therapists and orthopaedic trainees from across the UK.
The Registry can monitor the progress of patients who have been diagnosed with any and all hand conditions. It can thus allow a study of the natural history of such conditions, whether they are treated surgically or conservatively. The response of patients to injury and to joint preservation repair treatments can be variable. It is thus vital that patient progress is monitored, particularly as treatments at the forefront of medical advances may be expensive. Data collected will be used to provide better insight, knowledge and understanding to aid the continuous improvement of surgical outcomes. Particular research will focus on a deeper understanding of the nature of injury, the identification of trends in practice, tracking and monitoring new developments and detecting techniques that may have suboptimal outcome at the earliest opportunity.
The use of the registry is completely free of charge for surgeons, hospitals & patients.
What is Patient Self Registration?
Patient Self Registration is a process whereby a QR code has been created that takes you to your individual Patient Portal, in what is known as ‘self-registration mode’. You select your clinician and enter your details into the UK Hand Registry. You will then be asked to accept the Patient Consent Form and be directed to your preop questionnaire for completion.
You will receive a follow up questionnaire 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after your surgery. For those patients that had a joint replacement, you will receive a questionnaire every year for 10 years, which will follow up on how your specific implant is functioning.
It is important to note that all patient specific demographic information will be kept confidential and will not be shared.
