Summary of progress /findings (approx 300 words)
The BSSH award has allowed us to undertake background feasibility work and a small pilot into whether the nail should be replaced or discarded in children undergoing nail bed repair. This allowed successful completion of a 4 site RCT recruiting 60 children in just 4 months. This study was on the NIHR portfolio. The work led to the submission of an NIHR RfPB grant for a multicentre RCT on this topic*.
*Update - This submission was successful and NIHR has been awarded £350,000 for this study which will involve BSSH members throughout the UK.

What is the relevance/value of this research to hand surgery
This study has demonstrated that hand surgeons are coordinated and can recruit large patient numbers to target. It has tested the RSTN network nationally. It has resulted in over 20 new young surgeons being involved in research and 4 new Principle Investigators. Over 100 trainees have received GCP training on the back of this work. It has demonstrated national variation in the management of the commonest traumatic paediatric hand injury in the UK and provided an evidence base for management.
