Acumed BSSH Theatre Nurse Course
08 December 2025
Following the success of the 2 day surgeons’ Hand Fracture Fixation Course, it was then the turn of the LION Theatre Nurses to enjoy the incredible new facilities at the LION Research and Training Centre. An inspiring programme of talks, practicals and discussions was created by the Acumed team and Sister Rachel Jiya, Nursing Manager, with surgeon input from Kate Owers and Jonathan Jones.

Acumed Theatre Nurse Course at LION Oct 18th 2025 – Participants and Faculty (Tom Morris and Nic Smillie from Acumed plus Jonathan Jones BLLT Lead and Kate Owers BLLT Education Lead)
Over 30 participants enjoyed the bespoke training day and all learnt a lot about hand anatomy and the specialist nature of hand fracture fixation sets – including how to use and care for them. They were then able to handle these instruments and practice fixing fractures themselves during the practical workshop – with further opportunities for discussion and learning. In addition, the LION theatre team were introduced to a headless compression screw set kindly donated by Acumed, before even their surgeons had seen it! In particular, there was an incredibly insightful and open discussion about the daily challenges faced by the nursing team at LION - with the never-ending major trauma workload - that really got the multidisciplinary team thinking about ways to support their development and improve their processes and communication alongside practical skills.
The day ended with a fun and interactive quiz - where the winning team danced in celebration of their victory!
As a result of the success of this course, further nursing CPD to support the A+E, clinic and ward teams has been planned by the BSSH LION volunteers to deliver in January 2026.
